Day 68, country #10 of the trip, 39 of a lifetime
When selling bags on the street is illegal, you always have to be ready to run. These guys came up with the perfect solution, I call it the parachute.
If you look closely you can see that all the merchandise is roped together. If the authorities come, you can quickly round up your goods and hit the street.
Normally I’m a law abiding kind of girl, but I was presented with a great argument for these guys. Some Barcelona store owners feel upset because the parachuters avoid taxes, but the newly elected mayor feels differently. Instead she sees people getting up to go to work everyday. Instead of sitting at home embittered and festering, these guys are slowly making lives for themselves and their families in a new country.
Seeing it that way, I have to agree. Many of the factories that make fake designer bags place people in terrible working conditions and some fund terrorism, but I can’t help thinking that the simple act of providing people with the dignity to go to work everyday, negates many ills and is a step in the right direction.
So what do you think? Are these parachute guys criminals who should be stomped out?
