Do black people get sunburns? I’ve been asked so many times before that I figured the internet might want to know, too. Here I am in Ubud, Bali after accidentally testing the old question out.
The process is always the same. I spend several months in a cold, dark place like New York and then the moment I see the sun, I run out into it without sunscreen or skin protection of any kind and the result is quite predictable.
First my skin feels tight, then it starts to itch. I run to the bathroom convinced I’ve caught some rare tropical disease on my first day of arrival and notice that I’ve got a red, bumpy, bikini-shaped rash. Oh yeah, I forgot…
that yes, indeed, black people get sunburns.
We are not as susceptible as our fairer friends, but that just means we’re more likely to be caught off guard.
