Nerd alert, I’m about to talk about how to get free audiobooks and why they can make your life better every day but wait…
I can hear some of you now
Girl, are you talking about books on tape?! Because no…
Yes, dear, I SAY YES! Hear me out
I’ve been a library nerd all my life. And the thrill of picking out 8 books sealed in plastic from the squeaky turnstile at Holbrook Public Library was the highlight of my corduroy-clad Saturdays.
So I’m telling you, just like us, the books on tape done grown up, which means…
You can dig deep into personal development, steamy romance and “Literature” all while scrubbing the bathtub and driving your kids to school (maybe save the romance for after their little butts get out the car) ALL from your phone for FREE.
This simple lifehack HAS KEPT ME FROM LOSING MY MIND DURING HOURS OF PLAYGROUND TIME and It is shocking to me how many people don’t take advantage of these two free tools.
Libby, a.k.a OverDrive, a.k.a Your Local Library
Libby is an app by OverDrive, a free service offered by your public library, that lets you borrow ebooks and audiobooks just like back in the day except you don’t have to go anywhere to get it done.
I know what some of you are thinking. Dev, I’m not that technical and this seems complicated.
I swear it’s not!
Here’s what you need to get started:
#1. A valid library card from your local library
#2 The Libby app downloaded on your phone from the Apple App Store, Google Play or Windows store.
Legit, that’s it.
But let’s pretend this is still too daunting for you to pull off. Just show up at your local library with proof of address. When you arrive, a nice person who went to college for the expressed purpose of helping people get information access (a.k.a librarians, what up library science majors!) will set you up.
After that, you can sign into multiple libraries looking for whatever you want and no one is going to judge your taste.
I’m telling you I live in Budapest, Hungary and listen to books from my local library in Canton, Massachusetts
BUT THERE IS A DOWNSIDE!!!
Library books are shared resources which means you may have to wait for weeks or even months to get the book you want. Also, some books aren’t available at all and that’s why I present…
Free option #2
FREE AMAZON AUDIBLE!
Just like your library, Audible lets you listen to audiobooks from your phone.
And the best part is, you don’t have to search multiple libraries or wait for anybody to finish. It’s instant gratification time.
Amazon is dope for getting the products you need as fast and easy as possible and their audiobook service Audible does the same thing.
What I love most is that you don’t need to be tech-genius to get access.
Click here, follow the simple instructions and listen to whatever book you want in under ten minutes.
Go here from your phone or computer and sign up for a thirty-day trial, you’ll get two free books with zero obligation. (If you sign up with this link, I get a little bit of money which means I can keep writing for you)
Access their extensive collection, click a book you like. Tada book-nerd magic in your ears
BUT THERE IS A DOWNSIDE!!!
After the 30-day trial, they will start charging your credit card $14.95 a month and the point system is so genius that you’ll want to stay. So if after your two free books you want to get out (I’m still in and loving it), SET A REMINDER ON YOUR PHONE a few days before the expiration.
I am so into this Audiobook thing that I cannot leave the house without my Bluetooth headphones.
As a person who spends most of her day with someone who knows fewer than five words, I love having another grown-up in my ear telling me a story.
Give Audible a try and let me know what you think.
And if you are stumped for what to listen to, click here for my cannot miss books
